Emergency Response

In order to protect human health and the environment, subject sources are required to develop an emergency response plan that defines the steps the source and each employee should take during an accidental release of a regulated substance. Plans developed to comply with other EPA contingency planning requirements and the OSHA Hazardous Waste and Emergency Operations rule (HAZWOPER, 20 CFR 1910.120) will meet most of the requirements for the emergency response program. In addition, EPA and other National Response Team agencies have prepared Integrated Contingency Plan Guidance called "one plan." This guidance is the federally preferred method of response planning.
