Vocational/Technical Schools (VoTech)

As part of Gov. Perdue's larger JobsNOW initiative, promulgated on April 16, 2009, the N.C. Community College System and the N.C. Department of Commerce will collaborate to focus on job creation and economic development. The JobsNow initiative was designed to benefit North Carolinians and will create programs for 12 Community Colleges. Each program can be completed in less than six months. One of the programs selected under JobsNow initiative is Autobody Repair.

To provide students with up-to-date training on the new federal environmental regulations, it is recommended that vocational/technical schools include the training and certification requirements of the Autobody Shop Rule as part of the Autobody Repair program curriculum.

All Autobody technicians, including contractors, who spray apply coatings must be certified as having completed training in:

  • Proper spray gun selection, set up, operation and clean
  • Effective spray techniques for different types of coatings to improve transfer efficiency and minimize overspray
  • Paint booth set up and maintenance
  • Filter selection, installation, and maintenance

Training Deadlines

  • Autobody technicians at new shops have 180 days after hire to complete training
  • Autobody technicians at existing shops must complete training by January 10, 2011
  • Refresher training is required at least once every five years following the initial training date
